Abstract

648,515. Reservoir brushes; fixing handles. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Eisner R. S.). Oct. 18, 1948, No. 27025. [Classes 19 and 61 (i)] A brush of the type for applying liquids supplied under pressure from a reservoir and which comprises the combination of a handle attached to a base to which the liquid is supplied through a passage in the handle, a body of bristles attached at one end to the base and extending therefrom parallel to one another and a passage through the base having an outlet within the body of bristles is characterized in that the liquid is distributed among the bristles by means including a chamber lying within the body of bristles and having a plurality of outlets in its outer wall, a flexible conduit connecting the passage outlet from the base to the interior of the chamber and a flexible porous body connected to the chamber around the outlets and extending within and to the free ends of the bristles. In the form shown in Fig. 1 a wide flat paint brush has a passage 11 in the base. The passage has an inlet 12 and two outlets 13. Long bristles 14 are embedded in the wall of the base and two flexible tubes 15, 16 of synthetic rubber or other oil resistant material are connected to the base at the outlets. A flat chamber 20 is attached to the outer ends of the flexible tubes and is provided with a plurality of outlet orifices 22. This chamber lies within the bristles at about the line along which the bristles are flexed when the brush is in use and short bristles 23 are embedded in the outer wall of the chamber around the orifices 22. The handle 24 has a passage 25 and is provided with a coupling member 26 which is threaded into one end of the handle and has a passage aligned with that in the handle. The inlet 12 is enlarged at its outer end to receive the end of the member 26 and the base has a threaded flange 27 around the inlet -opening. The handle is secured by a collar 28 which is threaded on to the flange 27. When the collar is drawn tight it acts on a shoulder on the coupling member 26 to force the latter against a seat in the base. A gasket 29 may be interposed between the collar and the shoulder on the coupling. The handle is cut away at its inner end and carries aligning pins 30. The outer end of the handle is threaded for connection by a length of tubing to a reservoir of the coating fluid, the flow of fluid being controlled by a valve mounted in a passage in the handle. The valve has a stem 35 with a head 36 and is normally held closed by the action of a spring 39. In use coating fluid is admitted to the passage 11 and then flows through the tubes 15, 16 to the chamber 20 and then through the orifices 22 among the short bristles 23 and as the latter are flexed with the long bristles during operation of the brush the fluid saturates the long bristles and is transferred to the surface to be coated there being little or no tendency for lateral escape of the fluid when the brush is held horizontally or with the bristles higher than the handle. Fig. 3" shows a narrower brush which includes a base 42 having a central passage 43 the base being attached to a handle 44 by a coupling member as in the Fig. 1 construction. In this brush a single flexible tube 48 is attached to the outlet end of passage 43. In. another form of brush (Fig. 4, not shown) the short bristles 23 in the Fig. 1 brush are replaced by a piece of porous material such as sponge made of,synthetic rubber or other oil resistant material. U.S.A. Specification 2,388,605 is referred to.
