Abstract
648,450. Power measurements. HEATON. A. R., STRUSZYNSKI, W., and BUCKING- HAM, J. Oct. 19, 1949, No. 26807. [Class 37] A radio-frequency wattmeter for measuring the power flowing in a co-axial line 1, 2 comprises a current indicator M, Fig. 3, fed by a pair of oppositely connected square law detectors V1, V2, to both of which is applied a voltage from a resistance R1, R2 and thus proportional to the voltage, whilst equal and opposite voltages (proportional to the current) are applied from two equal resistances R, R in series with the line and earthed at their junction, the line being coiled helically to form chokes 3, Fig. 1, to prevent the unearthed ends of the resistances R being at earth potential for r.f. The resistances R, R preferably consist of carbon rods 10, Fig. 2, connected between the outer conductor 6 and an earthed ring 9. The meter measures EI cos #, # being the phase angle between the current I and the voltage E. Stray capacity Co, Fig. 3, is compensated by a trimming condenser C across R2 so that R1Co=R2C.
