[Classes 75(i) and 75(iii)] The safety control apparatus for a fuel burning appliance of the parent Specification is modified by the inclusion of a valve 180 controlled by a timing device 178 in the supply pipe 78 between the main control valve 20 and the safety control device 22 so as to be opened at a predetermined time to initiate operation of the appliance by allowing fuel to pass to the auxiliary burner 72, the flash pilot burner 70, the ignition pilot burner 114, and the thermocouple heating burner 112. The timing device 178 also closes the valve 180 to stop the operation of the appliance after a predetermined interval. As a further modification the burner 112 may be omitted, the burner 114 being positioned to ignite the main burner 10 and to heat the thermocouple 108.
