Abstract

Di-sodium 2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoate is prepared by heating di-sodium 2 : 1-hydroxynaphthoate in the substantial absence of materials containing free hydroxy groups and in a chemically-indifferent atmosphere between 220 DEG and 360 DEG C. The process is preferably carried out in a chemically-indifferent liquid at a pressure such that the boiling point is within the above temperature range. Suitable liquids are medicinal paraffin, tetrahydronaphthalene and melted paraffin wax. When the reaction is completed the product is extracted with water (the indifferent liquid used being first distilled off if desired), the solution filtered if desired, and the free acid precipitated with hydrochloric acid. The starting material is preferably prepared by the method of Specification 647,981. Specification 9612/89, [Class 2], also is referred to.
