Abstract

647,699. Plate heat-exchangers; heating air for combustion. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. June 23, 1948, No. 16161/49. Divided out of 647,678. [Classes 64(i) and 64(iii)] A plate heat-exchanger comprises at least two spaced banks 10, 11 of plates similar in outline, alternate spaces between plates in each bank being closed laterally to form longitudinal passages 3 for one heatexchanging fluid, the intermediate spaces being closed transversely to form passages 6 for a second fluid and closed laterally in the middle portions of the transverse edges of the plates to leave lateral openings 6a, 6b on both sides of the plates in each bank adjacent their transverse edges, separate sets of inner and outer manifolds being enclosed between and on each side of the banks on both sides of a central position member 13. As diagrammatically shown in Fig. 1, a gaseous fluid (e.g. exhaust gases from a combustion turbine) passes vertically upwards through the channels 3 and a second gaseous fluid (e.g. compressed air for the combustion chambers of a gas turbine) enters the upper central manifold 17, is divided into a central flow 12 and two flanking flows 20, 21 all of which lead to the lateral openings 6a in the banks, flows through the channels 6 in-contraflow to the fluid flowing through the channels 3 and thence to central and flanking manifolds 14, 22, 23 which combine into two flows 27, 28 leading from the lower front-end of the heat exchanger. In Fig. 2 an assembly of plates of the kind described in Specification 647,678 is housed in a casing comprising a front plate 42, side walls 31 a rear wall (not shown), arched manifolds 20, 21, 22, 23, and arched transverse ducts 18, 19, 25, 26. The upper central manifold 12 and the lower central manifodl 14 (not shown, see Fig. 1) are covered by a pressure resisting strip 45. Combs 46 maintain the plates in spaced relation. The central partition member 13 is in the form of a box girder construction which supports the plate assembly and which offers no resistance to the thermal expansion of the plates.
