Abstract
646,850. Drills. NUSSBAUM, L. Feb. 13, 1948, No. 4294. [Classes 83 (i), 83 (ii), 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXIII] A rotary core drill comprises a hollow crown 1, a cutting annulus 4 made of a diamondcontaining composition and mounted on a steel backing ring 16 secured to the crown, and an annular series of spaced cutting teeth 3 mounted in slots in the lower end of the crown. The crown has mud lubrication holes 17. In a modification, the teeth are disposed between radially-spaced inner and outer annuli. In another modification, the inner and outer ends of the teeth lie on circles each having a radius of a length between the lengths of the outer and inner radii of the inner and outer annuli respectively. In a further modification, the outer annulus is omitted. Making drills ; casting composite, cutters ; brazing.-The, or each, cutting annulus 4 is made in a mould 5, Fig. 4, by applying pressure to layers consisting of (a) a mixture of diamond fragments and carbide and/or oxide particles ; (b) bronze powder , and (c) a recessed solid steel ring 8, the whole being heated to a temperature at which the bronze powder fuses. The cutting teeth are made by pouring molten metal or alloy on to a layer of tungsten or other hard carbide particles 11 in a mould 10, Fig. 5.
