Abstract

646,176. Coiling; shearing. MERCER, G. H., and LABAN, W. H. Dec. 31, 1947, No. 34927. [Class 83 (iv)] In making coiled wire springs, diameter and pitch controlling devices are automatically operated according to a preset law variable, to produce different spring shapes, by adjusting the amplitude of the diameter and/ or pitch device movements and/or their speeds and phase relative to the wire feed speed. Wire 17 is drawn through unstraightening rolls 10 by sprung feed rolls 15, 16 and passes under a hold-down guide 59, over a fixed roller 28 and against the diameter controlling roller 26 where it is coiled and spaced by a tapered pitchsetting blade 30. An adjustably-fixed abutment 122 bends the leading wire end to ensure engagement below the roller 26. Movements for producing hour-glass &c. shapes are transmitted to the roll 26 by pivoting its mounting 24 through an adjustable length rod 36, and a slotted sprung link 37 from a cam 38 on a shaft 64. The movement amplitude and limit positions are varied by screw-shifting the pivot 44 of the link 37 along a scale 125 by a handle 48 and by altering the rod length through a screw 119, and/or by adjusting a fixed stop 126 for the link 37 to limit the cam engagement. The pitch blade 30 moves laterally and is operated and varied by similar mechanism driven from a further cam on the shaft 64, Fig. 2, not shown. The phase of the. diameter and pitch control movements is relatively adjusted by rotating the operating cams 38 &c. on the shaft 64. The feed roll shafts 81, Fig. 4, are variable-speed belt-driven from a motor pulley 74 and the relatively variable-speed cam-shaft 64 is driven through belting 84 and change-speed gearing 95 operated by an external handle for shifting the phase of the operations. Shearing. A support 57 is raised against the guide 59 to shear the wire 17 against an adjustably-fixed blade 61 by a rod 56 crank-operated from a further cam on the shaft 64. The feed is stopped during shearing by lifting the bearing housing of the upper roll, Fig. 5, not shown, through a crank driven by a further cam on the shaft 64. The feed rolls 15, 16 have several profiled passes to suit the wire size and the roller 26 is mounted on a ball-and-socket support, Fig. 7, not shown, for alignment with the wire helix-angle. A fly wheel arrangement for preventing shear blade shock is described in Specification 646,177.
