[Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] In a method of producing non-circular profiles the work is rotated at a uniform angular speed while the path of movement of the tool, which contacts the work in a perpendicular to the profile, is a cycloid symmetrical about two axes. The cycloidal movement of the tool is produced by the mechanism shown in Figs. 5 and 6. A gear 1 driven through a train 25 ... 27 from a motor 24 drives a hollow shaft 2 integral with a lever H1 which carries gears R2, R3 mounted on a common shaft journalled in the lever. The gear R2 meshes with a stationary gear R1 thereby driving a gear R4 which through ball joints and a telescopic shaft 3 rotates a shaft 02 rigid with a slide carrier 8 the slide of which is provided with a pin 11. The shaft 02 is journalled in a second slide 5 adjustable in a carrier 4 so that the eccentricity of the shaft 02 with respect to the axis of the gear-wheel R4 may be varied while the eccentricity of the pin 11 with respect to the shaft 02 may be similarly varied. Both slides are spring-biassed and adjustment is effected by means of eccentrics 13, 14 mounted on a shaft 12. These eccentrics are withdrawn from operative position after adjustment has been effected. The pin 11 carries an anti-friction bearing 41a which is secured to a body 41 free to follow the path of the pin on horizontal and vertical guides 17, 18 which are integral with each other and supported by anti-friction bearings 19, 20. The body carries an external grinding wheel 28 or an internal grinding wheel 29 and a cutting tool 38, the latter being brought into operative position by rotation of the body about a pivot 33. The latter is secured to a base 34 adjustable transversely of the bed 35, Fig. 7, of the machine by means of a lead screw 37. The headstock 44 and the tailstock 55a are mounted on a slide 49 which is traversed longitudinally on the bed 35 by mechanical or hydraulic means in a known manner. Reversal of the slide is also effected in known manner by a lever 50 and adjustable stops 51, 51a while the speed of traverse is governed by a Norton-type gear-box 54. The slide can be hand traversed by a rack and pinion. A motor 48 run in synchronism with the motor 24 drives the headstock.
