[Class 44] In a permutation lock consisting of discs 15, 16, rotatably mounted in a casing 1 and provided with gapped flanges 17, 18, a bolt 9 formed with projections 22, 23, is guided diametrically of the discs. A spring washer 24 presses the bolt 9 into contact with the edges of flanges 17, 18. The bolt may only be moved by its knob 14 to unlocking position, when the gaps in the flanges have been aligned with the projections 22, 23, but the bevelled edges of the projections, allow the bolt to be re-engaged with the discs in any position, the washer 24 and bolt 9 flexing to allow this. The discs 15, 16 are rotated by hands 25, 26, moving over a clock face in a recessed part 27 of the casing and connected to the discs by a sleeve 12 and spindle 13 respecttively, a pivoted or sliding cover 28 for the hands 'being provided. As shown applied to a padlock, the casing 1 is in two parts connected by cross-pieces 2, one of which guides the shackle 4. In the locked position a collar 6 on the shackle 4 lies between the cross-piece 2 and bolt 9. Modifications are described in which the discs are carried on sleeves freely rotatable one on each other and on a central post projecting from the back of the casing, a spring being arranged behind the discs which are retained in position by the casing or a pin through the post. The bolt may be formed as a pin having a flat stem and the flanges may slope inwardly or be bevelled off on the outside. The bolt may block a variety of fastenings or form the shackle itself.
