644,530. Coating electrical conductors by extrusion. MILNER, R. F. D. May 31, 1948, No. 14588. [Class 87 (ii)] An electric cable is made by laying-up or twisting a plurality of conductors or cores whilst applying interspacial and surrounding rubber or rubber-like material or plastic composition, by passing the conductors &c., during the laying-up or twisting, through rubber &c. extruding apparatus having a revolving pointholder in the outgoing end of which is included a point provided with through passages-one passage for each conductor-whereby said conductors are spacially arranged, and thence through a die which determines the size and shape of the surrounding rubber &c. Fig. 1 shows apparatus for doing this, comprising bobbins a carrying conductors or cores a<SP>1</SP> and mounted on a rotating carriage b driven by a shaft c which drives also a tubular rotating point-holder f housed in rubber-extruding apparatus g. The conductors a<SP>1</SP> pass through holes ml in the point m, one hole for each conductor, and as they pass through, the spaces therebetween are filled with rubber arriving from an extruding scroll n via flutes m<SP>2</SP> in the point. The conductors, separated by rubber, pass through a cavity which is kept filled with rubber by the scroll and thence into a stationary die q. Between the point and the die the conductors are twisted. To prevent rotation of the twisted conductors as they pass through the die q, flutes or channels q<SP>2</SP> are provided on the latter. The die is carried by a holder q3, which is adjustable longitudinally. The finished cable passes through a cooling trough h.
