Class 80(ii)] [Also in Groups XVIII and XIX] A clutch mechanism particularly for connecting ,an indicating or control member spindle 3 to a coaxial hollow shaft 1 driven by the balance mechanism of a measuring device, e.g. a weighing machine, and which minimizes the axial and rotational effects on both parts 'during engagement and disengagement comprises fixed clutch members constituted by a drum 2 on the shaft 1 and movable clutch plates 5, 6 axially loaded into engagement by a spacing spring 7 and fixed respectively to the spindle 3 and a coaxial sleeve 4 slidably mounted on and preferably splined to the spindle 3. Cam faces on a wheel 10 engaging flanges 8, 9 on the sleeve and spindle permit engagement or force disengagement of the clutch. The clutch may be used for a series measurement wherein an initial reading is taken and the wheel 10 rotated to disengage the clutch and return the indicator to either of two limiting abutments (not shown), e.g. a zero stop, with possible slipping of the cam and flange faces until the clutch is re-engaged, whereupon a further reading is taken. The wheel 10 may be connected to a supply valve controlling or being controlled by the medium to be measured, and the clutch member 2 may comprise two parts spaced by bolts. Both plates 5, 6 may slide on the spindle 3.
