Abstract

644,426. Electric sound recording. BOSWELL, I. I., PLANER, G. V., and PLANER, F. E. Aug. 21, 1947, No. 23237. [Class 40 (ii)] In a sound recording or reproducing apparatus, the permittivity of successive areas of a dielectric carrier body are permanently changed by external influences in accordance with the sound to be recorded. As shown, in the recorder, Fig. 1, the electric field between electrodes 24, 15 which corresponds with the sound received by microphone 20, causes variations in the permittivity of the dielectric strip record body 10, which is moved between 14, 15 by the driven rollers 11, 12. In the reproducer, Fig. 2, the record 10 is moved between the electrodes 14, 25, in series with the source of constant voltage 26 and resistor 27. The voltage developed at the latter energizes the louclspeaker 29. In further embodiments, not shown, the devices shown in Figs. 1, 2 may be used together as a record copier and in a further embodiment, not shown, the change in permittivity along the strip is used to vary the frequency of the oscillator, the output of which is applied to a frequency discriminator. The record body may be in the form of a strip or disc of thermoplastic resinous material which supports particles of a ceramic dielectric, or alternatively the metal strip or disc may carry a varnish coating which incorporates the dielectric particles.
