Abstract
Sulphur dioxide is made from calcium sulphate or a mixture thereof with an aluminous or silico-aluminous ore by subjecting the raw material to a primary baking at 800 DEG to 900 DEG C. in a first burning appliance under reducing conditions and subjecting the resulting product containing calcium sulphide, directly and without substantial cooling, to a secondary baking at a higher temperature, e.g. over 1000 DEG C., in a second burning appliance under oxidizing conditions, the solid residue left being a fat lime, hydraulic cement or an alumina-yielding material. In one embodiment, two rotary ovens or kilns are used in coupled relation, the gases during reduction being evacuated to a chimney, while the gases rich in sulphur dioxide evolved in the second kiln are collected in known manner, preferably after passing through a heat exchanger.
