Abstract

642,435. Endless-belt conveyers. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Nov. 19, 1947, No. 30712. Convention date, Sept. 4, 1946. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Groups XVI and XXXV] Paper sheets and similar articles are held on a rubber or plastic conveyer belt 1 by electrostatic means for feeding to devices such as a scanning device 10 for an electrical facsimile transmitting system, and, in order to increase the adhesion between the paper and the conveyer, means are provided to establish after the electrical charge has been produced an electrical connection between the side of the conveyer remote from the paper and the side of the paper, remote from the conveyer. The effect of this short-circuiting is said to enhance the adhesion of the sheet to the conveyer. The belt 1 is freed of dust by a brush 13 and sucker 14, and is provided on its inner side with separated strips of tin foil 20 engaged by a metal roller 21 connected to the positive side of a D.C. source. The negative side is connected to a metal band 22 passing over rollers 23 and engaging the sheets. The charged sheet passes between two connected metal conductors 24 which effect the short-circuiting. The belt 1 may be driven by the rollers 2, 3, or by feed rollers 6. The roller 3 may be earthed, and the belt finally carries the sheet through electric discharge devices comprising conductors (Fig. 1, not shown), connected to a source of A.C. voltage. In a modification the belt 1 is coated on the inside with tin foil. connected to the earthed side of a source of D.C., and the positive side is connected to a band similar to the band 22. In a further modification the sheets are charged by a frictional electrostatic device comprising a cylinder covered with cat-skin, felt or silk which is driven at a different speed from the belt, the sheet being pressed by an upper roller into contact with the felt &c. covered roller. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 described a similar method of charging the sheets 5 by means of a covered roller 7 and a pressing roller 8 which is mounted insulatedly. In this case no short-circuiting plates are used, and the electrical discharge is effected by means of metal rollers 3, 11 connected to the opposite poles of an alternating current voltage. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
