642,403. Craft automatic control systems. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. Sept. 11, 1946, No. 27257. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXIX] A control system for an aeroplane, submarine, &c. comprises a manually-operated column 1 connected to a transmitting Selsyn 2 which is coupled to a receiving Selsyn 3 for controlling a servo-mechanism 4 actuating the control surface 5, and means, such as a gyroscope 8, for detecting angular displacement of the vehicle about one or more reference axes, is connected to a differential Selsyn 6 interposed between the transmitting and receiving Selsyns 2, 3. The signal from the gyroscope can be applied to the slider of a potentiometer, and the resultant voltage passed to Selsyn 6 through an electrical power amplifier, or, alternatively, a mechanical or fluid-pressure servomotor link can be used between the gyroscope and Selsyn. Separate gyroscopes may be employed for roll, pitch, and yaw, and voltages corresponding to rate and/or acceleration of the deviation may be obtained from an electrical pick-off or from a variable induction gyroscope and added through differentiating circuits to the original signal. According to the Provisional Specification, a differential gear is interposed before the servo-mechanism 4 and the movement of the controlled member is fed back into the differential, and the output of the servomechanism is also fed to a variable-delivery hydraulic generator which supplies a hydraulic motor or ram moving the control surface.
