Abstract
Graphite material for dynamo brushes is made by mixing at an elevated temperature, e.g. 100 DEG C., natural or artificial graphite, preferably of coarse particle size say - 16+32 B.S.S., and pitch in the presence of a volatilizable hydrocarbon solvent such as solvent naphtha, moulding the mixture to shape, preferably by extrusion, and heating the moulded shape in air to a temperature about 200 DEG C. which is sufficiently high to remove the volatilizable solvent but not so high as to cause appreciable decomposition or volatilization of the pitch. A minor proportion of sulphur or of an oxidizing agent such as benzoyl peroxide, or selenium dioxide, and a proportion of finely comminuted bituminous coal may be added. Prior to use the pitch may be purified, e.g. by distillation, and the graphite may be treated to ensure minimum ash content. Specification 353,493 is referred to.
