Abstract
642,381. Making hollow-ware. FIRESTONE TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd. Aug. 15, 1947, No. 22702. Convention date, Aug. 16, 1946. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XVII] Uniting by fusion.- In making singlewalled barrels or other metal containers, a bung-reinforcing patch is welded inside the container by applying a welding flame to the outside surface of the container. The barrel, which consists of two end cup-shaped sections 10, 11 and a central annular section 12 formed with circumferential corrugations 14, 15, has the central ring formed by punching with a bung opening 16, and at the same time with an embossed recess 18. The patch piece 17 is stamped in slightly concave-convex form with its edge portion contoured to make uninterrupted contact with the inside surface of the section 12 about the bung opening, the edge of the part 17 extending to a line inwardly from a shoulder 19 on the section 12, Fig. 4. At the same time an opening 21 is punched through the centre of the patch into which is fusion-welded a bung liner 22. Over the liner is placed a bung reinforcement 22a which is welded to adjacent portions of the parts.. The centre ring 12 and the patch 17 are then welded to each other by applying an atomic hydrogen torch to the outside of the ring at the outline of the recess. The welds of the patch to the centre ring and to the bung liner are then tested for leaks by passing air under pressure through the bung opening 16 around the liner 22 into the space between the patch and centre ring. The protruding end of the bung liner is then pressed against the outside surface of the ring 12 and fusion-welded thereto. The end portions of the barrel are then fusion-welded to the centre ring. In order to weld the patch plate to the centre ring around the edge of the recess the patch plate with its bung reinforcement and liner is placed on a block 26, Fig. 3, mounted on a jig 24 which is tiltable and also revoluble so that a substantially horizontal welding position 39 is progressively presented to the atomic hydrogen torch 30. The block is provided with an annular groove 29 and passages 42 for the supply of hydrogen to the point so as to prevent oxidation. The ring 12 is placed over the patch at the recessed portion and clamped on the block by a member 27 through a nut 33 and a stud 31. A clamp yoke 28 pivoted at 34 is then brought over to clamp the edges of the centre ring to the block, the yoke being slotted to engage a hinged bolt 35 and nut 38. The torch is then applied to the outline of the recess at 19, between the parts 27, 28, so as to melt the part 12 to fill up the groove 9 and unite it to the edge of the patch. The parts may be of stainless steel, except the bung reinforcement 22a, which does not communicate with the interior of the barrel and may be made of aluminium, steel, &c. Specification 589,803 is referred to.
