Abstract

642,051. Making scouring-pads. GEFELDT, R. W. April 19, 1948, No. 10793. Convention date, April 22, 1947. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group VI] A method of manufacturing a pad for scouring kitchen utensils from a length of tubular knitted metal wire 1 having a flattened crosssection comprises rolling both ends of the fabric upon themselves towards the central portion 5 of the length of the fabric to form two annular rolls 2 of substantially equal size joined by a short intermediate portion of the fabric, and winding a metal wire 3 around the intermediate portion so as to contract it to a lesser diameter than that of the annular rolls and so draw the rolls towards one another. The metal wire is passed between rollers to flatten its crosssection before being machine knitted into tubular form. On cutting the knitted tube to correct length, the tension in the knitted wire acts to roll back the ends as viewed in Fig. 1. Axial pressure applied to the annulus serves to roll back the ends to the required diameter, shown in Fig. 3. The central part 5 is then reduced in diameter by the wire 3 to such an extent as to prevent the user's finger from passing therethrough. Several scouring pads may be threaded on to a mandrel where they may be compressed. The wire 3 may be wound around the knitted fabric and tightened by means of a machine.
