Abstract

641,833. Ironing-presses. PROSPERITY CO., Inc. Feb. 11, 1948, No. 4057. Convention date, Aug. 16, 1946. [Class 138 (ii)] In a sleeve-pressing machine with opposed pressing elements 11, 12 having relative opening and closing movements, an envelope 22, 23 for receiving a sleeve is carried by both pressing elements and includes a member 22 having opposed portions arranged in heat conducting relation to the pressing faces of the pressing members and with an intermediate fold portion 24 connecting like edges of the opposed portions. Figs. 2 and 7 show a press having two sets of pressing elements 11, 12 arranged for pressing both sleeves of a shirt simultaneously. The movable elements 12 are carried by arms 13 pivotally mounted on a standard 14, each member being opened by a spring 21 and closed by a stem 18 which is moved by a compressed-air-actuated diaphragm 17. A table 1 which is movable both vertically and horizontally carries two forms 2 on which the sleeves of the shirt are placed, the forms 2 being movable to a position between the pressing members 11, 12. The table 1 can move horizontally by means of pivoted links 5 which are carried by a vertically movable cross-slide 8 on a pedestal 10. Attached to each pair of pressing elements is the envelope, Fig. 3, between which the form 2 is received. Each envelope comprises a member 23 which is slidably fixed to the pressing element 12 by pins 44, 45 engaging slots in the envelope and a member 22 which is fixed to the other pressing element 11 by a lip 46. The member 23 has a folded portion 25 for ironing one edge of the sleeve and is connected by a linkage system 27, 31, 36, 39 to the cross-slide 8 on which the table 1 is supported so that when the table is raised to enable the armhole part of a long sleeve to be ironed the member 22 is moved laterally to the left as shown in Fig..2, to accommodate the greater width of this part of the sleeve. The member 22 comprises two leaves resiliently connected by a fold 24 which is inclined to conform to the tapered edge of the form 2 for ironing the tapered side of the sleeve. In use the cuff part of a sleeve is ironed first. To iron the remainder the table 1 is then raised and through the linkage moves the member 23 to the left to accommodate the greater width of the form and at the same time the pressure of the tapered edge 24 on the form 2 swings the table to the left on its links 5 so that the sleeve continues to engage the edge 25 of the member 23.
