[Class 38(v)] [Also in Groups I, VI, XI and XVIII] In a coffee making machine in which infusion is initiated by depressing a handle 36 and is terminated when a predetermined weight of infusion collects in a receptacle 30, the handle on being depressed opens a valve 84 supplying water under pressure to a boiler 88, and switches on a pair of heating elements contained respectively in the boiler and in a scale pan 32 for the receptacle. The handle is mounted on a bar 212 pivoted to a slidable rod 204. Fig. 14. which bears upon the valve spindle, and to a link 218 to form a toggle which is held in the over-centre position, when the handle is depressed, by the valve spring. The switches are closed by a member 300 mounted on the rod 204 bearing against spring contacts 256 and 258 controlling the boiler and scale pan heating elements respectively. The receptacle 30 is balanced against a counterweight 186 on a scale beam fulcrummed at 172. On descent of the filled receptacle a roller carried by the scale beam strikes a stud mounted on the bar 212 to trip the toggle, when the valve spring closes the valve and disengages the member 300 from the spring contacts. A stud 306 carried by the scale beam closes a spring contact 264 when the receptacle descends, to maintain the scale pan heating elements in circuit until the receptacle is lifted from the pan. The downward movement of the receptacle is accelerated to enhance the snap action by providing a pair of permanent magnets 232, 234 adapted to approach each other, and by so arranging the counterweight and scale pan that, on descent of the latter, their moment arms are respectively decreased and increased.
