Abstract

640,824. Diaphragms. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO., Ltd., and KEDDIE, J. E. Nov. 8, 1945, No. 29820. [Class 40 (iv)] A diaphragm for a loudspeaker is of a continuous piece of woven fabric made of extruded or drawn thread or filaments, the cone being rendered substantially rigid by the application of a binder such as cellulose acetate, while the peripheral portion is left untreated to provide a flexible support. The threads are preferably of glass but use may be made of synthetic plastic materials. In the preferred form, the diaphragm is shaped to provide a central cone 11 with a toroidal surround 13 and the cone 11 and rim 14 are rendered rigid with dope while the surround 13 is left flexible. The centre of the diaphragm, with the speech coil former 9, is preferably mounted on a support of similar material comprising a disc of fabric suitably shaped and doped over the darkened portions 16, 19, leaving the intervening annulus flexible.
