Abstract

640,500. Inductances. HOLZER, R. C. DE. April 16, 1946, No. 8225. [Class 38 (ii)] An air-cored inductance comprises two series of turns of the same diameter, the turns of part of one series 8 lying between the same number of turns of the other series 11, the end of one series being connected to the beginning of the other. To make a prototype inductor having required characteristics, the first series of turns 14, Fig. 6, is formed by winding a conductor round a notched cruciform former of low loss material. A second series of turns 17 is wound on the former with its turns partly interspaced with series 14 and its beginning 16 is connected to the end of the first series by a clamp 20. In order to adjust the characteristics of the inductor, clamp 20 may be loosened and the two series rotated relatively. Three series of turns, wire of rectangular cross-section, and stranded wire may be used. Prototype inductances so made may be copied, either exactly or with different dimensions obtained by applying the known laws of similarity. It is stated that the characteristic with which the invention is particularly concerned is the coefficient x in the formula R d = K.f x , where R d is the dynamic resistance and f the frequency which is above 3 megacycles/sec. Numerical examples are given.
