Abstract

640,063. Chucks and sockets. BAYLEY, G. A. Jan. 5, 1948, No. 334. [Class 83 (iii)] A self-aligning chuck or socket in which an outer member 2 is secured to an inner member 1 by a lining of resilient material 3 has means for providing a positive drive between the two members, which are free to move radially independently of each other. A tapered or splined socket 1 for the shank of a reamer is fitted within the outer member 2, which may also be tapered, and the lining 3 of rubber is bonded to them. The drive from the outer member to the socket is taken through a disc 8 having a slot 12, in which the tang 11 of the reamer shank fits loosely, and radial extensions 7 that engage in slots in the outer member. End thrust may be taken by the disc 8 or by a ring 4 held in place by turnedover lugs on the socket. Alternatively, the tool-holding socket may be fitted outside an internal driving member. Applications to taps, dies, counterbores and rifling and to a non- rotary version are also referred to.
