Abstract
639,857. Louvre ventilators; shutters. RUSSELL CO., F. C. June 17, 1947, No. 15950. Convention date, Aug. 11, 1941. [Classes 20 (iii) and 137] A closure for a building aperture includes a number of parallel slats 34, each pivoted about a longitudinal axis 36, 52 spaced from its longitudinal edges, and an intermediate support 45, 76 extending transversely across the slats with arms 51, 77 to which the slats are pivotally connected and between which are spaces 55 in which the slats may turn into planes at substantially 90 degrees to the aperture. The aperture has a wooden frame 1, 2, 4, 5 while the closure has a sheet metal front frame 6, 7, 8 and a rear frame 30, 31, 32 of heavier gauge sheet metal which telescope to fit apertures of different widths. The inner edge of the front frame is flanged inwardly at 9, 10, 11, and panels consisting of frames 16 and screening 17 are received by offset portions 14 of the side flanges on angle piece 18 at the bottom and between the flange 10 and a parallel retainer 19 at the top. Catches 26 pivoted to the panels at 27 enter slots 29 in the portions 15 of flanges 9 to retain the panels. The rear frame has flanges 33 which lie against the outer surface of the aperture. Slats 34, with actuating levers 35 secured to their undersides at the ends and the centre, extend horizontally across the rear frame, and the levers 35 pivot and are balanced about pins 36 on the side frame. A light tight, substantially water tight effect is obtained by means of overlapping flanges 38, 39, 42 on the slats and 41 on the frame. The central support 45 is attached to the outer frame and has upwardly inclined arms 51 which carry pins 52 about which the central levers 35 pivot. The slats may pivot until the upper edges are lower than the bottom edges (see Fig. 4), and the outer surfaces act as reflectors. The levers 35 are pivotally connected by pins 57 to tie bars 58 and are actuated simultaneously through the handle 70 which turns the worm 69 meshing with the gear 67 mounted on the rod 61, rigid arms 60 on the rod 61 being pivotally connected to the tie bars at 59. Figs. 7 and 9 illustrate a sheet metal central support 76 of channel section which surrounds the tie bar 58. The inner and outer frames may be secured together by welding &c. and the bottom portions 8, 32, 74 slope in order to run off rain &c.
