Abstract

639,455. Cutting fabric. BOULY, H. G. (International Cellucotton Products Co.). July 30, 1948, No. 20344. [Class 31 (i)] [Also in Group VI] In a method of making fabric loops a tubular length of textile material is partially severed at spaced points leaving easily broken bonds between adjacent pieces. The sections are subsequently passed over a mandrel, separated and rolled up on themselves to form rings. The roll of tubular fabric 3, Fig. 1, is fed to a cutting device comprising a bladed rotor 5 bearing against a fixed anvil 6, in the form of a block having two longitudinal grooves in it, so that the material is severed except for two narrow bonds on each side. The material may now be rewound on a second roll 34 or it may pass direct to the finishing mechanism shown in Fig. 2. Here co-operating wheels 37, 38 with rubber teeth 40 feed the fabric on to a mandrel 35, having a tapered end and on which the friction causes the sections to separate, and roll the pieces on themselves to form the finished rings 1. Movement through the machine may be assisted by driven friction bands 43, 44, for feeding the fabric on to the mandrel, and bands 41, 42, for passing the finished loops along the mandrel. The cutting head is shown in Fig. 3 and comprises two pillars 12 carrying bearings for the rotary cutter spindle 10 and providing guides for a bed 16 carrying the cutting anvil 6. The bed may be adjusted for height by a central threaded support 17 and may be tilted about a longitudinal axis by adjusting bolts 25 which move it about a hemispherical support member 22.
