Abstract

639,045. Making wheel rims. POTTER, E., and AUSTRALIAN STEEL SPLIT PULLEYS PROPRIETARY, Ltd. Nov. 15, 1946, No. 33945. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 2, 1947.] [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Stamping.-In a method of making a wheel rim from a cylindrical blank, the well-base and tyre seat portion are formed by purely compressive forces applied concurrently at a multiplicity of points around the circumference, the blank being partially rotated between successive inward thrusts. The operation is carried out in a press comprising radially movable outer die elements and a frictionally rotated inner die. The press comprises front and rear cover plates, the rear plate 6 being shown in Fig. 3, spaced apart by sector-shaped blocks 10. Slidably mounted between the plates and between the blocks .10 are dies 14 adapted to be moved radially by toggle struts 16 having at their ends cylindrical bolsters 15 engaging in cylindrical sockets formed in the dies and in a surrounding ring 11 rotatable through about eighteen degrees by means of an operating lever 12. The ring 11 is turned by a number of small steps, while a central die or former on which the work is pressed is rotated by a slipping clutch drive between successive inward movements of the dies. The press may be used to form the well-base 20, 21 only, the tyre seat flats 22 and the tyre retaining flanges being subsequently formed as by rolling or spinning. The inner die is made in parts to facilitate the removal of the work.
