An apparatus for the forced feed of crushers, in particular sugar cane mills, of the type comprising a feed cylinder 2 and at least one crushing cylinder 1 positioned above said feed cylinder, comprises in combination a continuously moving feed member 6 positioned near said crushing cylinder in order to feed the material by gripping it between said feed member 6 and said cylinder 1, and a guide plate 14 adapted to convey between the feed cylinder 2 and said crushing cylinder 1 the material which is pushed in the compressed state, and arranged in such a manner as to scrape the surface of the feed member 6 and to be adjacent to the surface of the feed cylinder 2 in order to prevent the partial leakage of said material between the feed member and said feed cylinder, and said apparatus is characterized in that it comprises an adjusting device 10 which enables the position of said feed member 6 relatively to the upper cylinder 1 of the crusher to be adjusted so as to obtain the maximum compression of the material towards the inlet of the crusher. Material is fed to the moving feed member 6, which comprises a roller driven from the feed cylinder 2, on an inclined table 5 on which it is deposited by a conveyer 4. The guide plate 14 is fixed by a bracket to the bearings of the roller 6 and is adjustable therewith. In a modification an endless belt is spaced above the table 5 and feed roller 6 to aid in the feed of material thereover. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a modification in which the roller 6 of either of the above described apparatus is covered by an endless belt which conveys the material to the inlet of the crusher, the roller 6 in this case not being stated to be adjustable. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
