Abstract

In a continuous emulsion polymerization process the monomer is emulsified in a non-acid reacting aqueous medium and the emulsion acidified, e.g. by addition of sulphuric, hydrochloric, nitric or acetic acid, preferably immediately before its introduction into the polymerization apparatus. The necessity for stirring is thereby eliminated. Catalysts, e.g. hydrogen peroxide and persulphates, may be added before, during or after emulsification. Specified monomers are vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylic and methacrylic acid esters, acrylonitrile, styrene, fumaric acid esters and mixtures. Additional monomer, e.g. in the form of similarly acidified emulsion, may be added at one or more points. In the example, an aqueous emulsion of vinyl chloride was made in a turbo-mixer using sodium cetyl sulphate and shortly before introducing it into a tubular reaction vessel at 35 DEG C., acid hydrogen peroxide solution was added to a pH value of 2.5. Emulsion was continuously re-circulated by pumping from a point one-third from the beginning of the tube.
