Abstract

638,178. Determining physical qualities of materials. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 21, 1947, No. 23154. [Class 37] [Also in Group XL (a)] In apparatus for measuring low gas pressure by measuring the current between two electrodes in the gas, the electron path being made long by an applied magnetic field, the anode 7 consists of a rod projecting through a closed end 2 of a cylindrical cathode 1 whose other end is open and projects beyond the anode, and is surrounded by a solenoid 8. The cathode may be provided with a glass envelope 9, or may consist of a metal deposit on the interior of the envelope 9. The open end of the envelope 9, or the cathode 1, is sealed to the vessel 18 containing the gas (Fig. 3) and the potential difference across the discharge space is measured with a constant applied voltage between electrodes. Additional electrostatic shielding may be provided by a metalgauze disc in the open end of the cathode. Specifications 474,845 and 555,134 are referred to.
