Abstract

637,673. Printing - telegraph receivers. CREED & CO., Ltd., SALMON, R. D., and TURNER, F. J. L. July 25, 1947, No. 20087. [Class 40 (iii)] A signal selector and storage mechanism for a printing-telegraph receiver in which a number of storage members are sequentially and selectively set by a striking member carried by an armature responsive to the elements of a signal and the striking member is of dimensions no greater than would be necessary to coact with one storage member only, is provided with an intermediate member spanning the positions of all the storage members and with means whereby the intermediate member is caused to act selectively upon said storage members in turn. The armature 2 of the receiving magnet 1, Fig. 1, is biassed to the released position by a spring 4 and is integral with a shaft 3 on which is pivotably mounted an arm 5 having a projection 18 associated with a supporting arm 17 on a setting lever 14 integral with the shaft 3 and having an end 15 in engagement with a cam on a shaft 13. The arm 5 is provided with a second projection 24 associated with a turned-over portion 23 on a lever 19 having its end 21 held against a second cam on the shaft 13. The lever 14 periodically raises the armature 2 close to the poles of the magnet 1 and shortly afterwards the cam operates lever 19 and the portion 23 so that the arm 5 is free to take its up or down position according to the de-energized or energized condition of the magnet 1. The return of the lever 19 enables the portion 23 to engage below or above projection 24 to hold the arm 5 in its upper or lower position, respectively. The arm 5 has a bent portion 6 supporting a striker 7 reciprocated by means of a lever 8 having an end 11 in engagement with a further cam on the shaft 13. In one of the positions of the arm 5, the striker 7 is, as shown in Fig. 2, arranged to engage the lower edge 41 of a light frame 27 pivoted on a rod 28 and carrying a projection 39 arranged to be brought in succession opposite short arms 40 carried by five storage members 25, of which three only are shown. The frame 27 is traversed across the storage members 25 by a lever 30 having an arm 32 engaged by the arm 33 of a lever 34 rotated through a limited arc by a spring 38 as the end 37 engages a grooved cam carried by the shaft 13, the frame being returned by a spring 35 acting on the arm 32 which is released from the arm 33 of the lever 34 by the engagement of its end 37 with a raised portion of the cam groove. The frame 27 is returned after each rotational operation about rod 28 to a fixed position against a bar 46 by means of a spring 43 attached to a rotatable member 45 carrying a bail 44, the rotatable member having a stop position against a bar 58. The storage members are frictionally mounted on a rod 26 carried by a frame 47 secured to a shaft 48 carrying arms 53, 54 engaged by a cam on the translator shaft 52 which is released shortly after the shaft 13. The arm 53 rocks the frame 47 carrying the storage members 25 which according to their set positions selectively engage upper or lower bell-cranks 49, the upper members only being shown, to move code bars 50 upwardly or downwardly respectively. The arm 54 restores the frame 47 carrying the storage members 25, and almost immediately a frame 55 rotated counterclockwise by an arm 56 associated with a further cam on the shaft 52 engages depending arms of those storage members 25 which have been operated and restores them to their normal position. In a modification, the actuating element for the storage members is a pin slidably mounted in a rod and having its axis at right angles to that of the rod which is traversed past the storage members, the pin being struck by the light frame when it is rotated by the striking member. Specification 600,297 is referred to.
