Abstract
637,198. Microscopes. WATSON & SONS, Ltd., W., and REYERSBACH, C. D. July 14, 1947, No. 18735. [Class 97 (i)] In a microscope in which the eye-piece may be moved to vary the angle of its axis relative to that of the objective and a compensating member is rotated automatically to maintain the image in the eye-piece and in the correct attitude, the member is on an arm rotatable about an axis transverse to that of the objective, which arm also carries the eye-piece rotatable about an axis parallel to that of the arm, interengaging gears fixed to the objective and eye-piece, causing the axis of the latter to . move as the eye-piece is rotated, whereby the arm and also the compensating member are rotated. The invention is described as applied to a microscope having a rotatable nose-piece for objectives 8 and a housing 34 movable in an arcuate slot 33 and having a circular flange to support an eye-piece. A beam 7, incident on the objective is reflected at right angles as beam 16 by a prism 15 on to a prism 25, forming the compensating member, whence it is successively reflected by two perpendicular surfaces 27, 28 thereof to a prism 35 fixed to the housing 34 whence it reaches the eye-piece. The prism 25 is supported on a plate 23 supported on a pivot 17 so as to be rotatable about the axis of the beam 16, the plate 23 carrying at its other end a pivot 32 through which the reflected beam passes and which supports the housing 34. A gear 38, coaxial with the beam 16, is fixed to the casing, and a gear 37 meshing therewith, is fixed to the housing 34. Thus when the housing 34 is moved from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that in Fig. 5 to adjust the eye-piece, the prism 25 rotates about the axis 16, and the gears 37, 38 cause the housing 34 and hence the prism 35 to rotate through an equal angle relative to the prism 25, whereby the image is maintained correctly oriented and positioned in the eye-piece field. Lenses 14, 31 are provided to compensate the light path and allow standard objectives and eye-pieces to be used.
