Abstract

636,712. Centrifugal pumps; gas turbines. NASH ENGINEERING CO. Feb. 27, 1948, No. 6062. Convention date, Sept. 19, 1945. [Classes 110(i) and 110(iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A fuel supply system for a gas turbine or reciprocating engine comprises a booster pump feeding main and emergency pumps in parallel, the two latter pumps discharging to a fuel feed line. As shown diagrammatically in Fig. 5, a centrifugal booster pump 18 delivers fuel to a main pump 43, which discharges by way of a check valve 44 to a fuel line 45 leading to burner nozzles: The booster pump 18 is also connected to the fuel line 45 by way of an emergency pump 20 of the sliding-vane type and a check valve 56. A valve 55 in a by-pass pipe 54 is normally open, but may be adjusted either manually or automatically to bring the emergency pump 20 into action. A relief valve 100 is provided. As shown in Fig. 3, the booster pump 18 and a liquid-ring pump 19 are directly driven by a motor 17, the emergency pump 20 being driven through gearing 24, 25; the unit is submersed in a fuel tank 10. Any vapour in the fuel entering the impeller 33 of the booster pump 18 collects in annular grooves 60, 61, and passes by way of passages 64-67 to the liquid-ring pump 19. The mixture of air, vapour and fuel discharged at 68 by the pump 19 passes upwardly past gears 24, 25, lubricating them, and then flows through an annular chamber 75, cooling the motor 17 before being discharged at 81.
