Abstract

636,268. Drilling-machines. ARTHUR, E. M. Sept. 24, 1947, No. 25901. [Class 83 (iii)] A machine for drilling or rotary cutting operations comprises a spring device for applying pressure to the tool spindle 13 for automatically feeding the tool during the cutting operation, means for rendering the spring device inoperative, and manual means for feeding and returning the tool when the spring device is inoperative. The spring device shown in Fig. 2 comprises a leaf-spring 1 adjustably mounted in a rocker 2 which is pivoted to an extension 4 of the machine post 5. A lever 8 attached to the rocker 2 is connected by a link 9 to a hand lever 10 which is depressed to actuate the rocker 2 and cause the spring 1 to deflect and exert a force on a member 6 which is adjustably secured to the spindle 13. The deflected spring 1 feeds the tool until a hand-feed lever 14, which is rotated from the tool spindle 13 by a rack-and-pinion, releases the pressure on the leaf-spring-1 by displacing the lever 10 which is then returned to the raised position by a spring 23 acting on the free end of the leaf-spring 1. The pressure exerted by the leaf-spring 1 may be altered by varying the position of the member 6, adjusting screws 12 in the rocker 2, or by sliding the leaves of the spring in the rocker 4 towards or away from the tool spindle 13. In a modification, Fig. 3, the leaf-spring 18 applies pressure to the tool spindle 13 (not shown) through the hand-lever shaft 15, the spring 18 being connected to a chain 20 which passes over a chain-wheel 16 clutched to the shaft 15 and is connected to a helical spring 17. The spring 18 is anchored to a foot lever 19 which, when depressed, moves the spindle 13 downwardly and causes the spring 18 to apply pressure thereto. When depressed, the lever 19 engages a catch on a pivoted link 22; it is automatically disengaged therefrom at the end of the cutting operation by the spring 18 which trips the link 22 so that the lever 19 and tool spindle are then raised by the spring 17. By de-clutching the chain-wheel 16, the shaft 15 may be operated by hand. At the end of the cutting operation, the tool may dip into a container of cutting oil.
