Abstract

636,219. Moulding confectionery. LATINI, L., and LATINI, E. May, 21, 1947, No. 13606. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] Hard candies with or without sticks are made by feeding a stick of candy 38 between intermittently rotating feeding rollers 14, cutting the candy into pieces by scissor knives 41, 42, moving a bar 71 to knock the cut pieces into chambers 84 in a rotary distributor 70, moving the cut pieces by means of pistons 90 between upper and lower reciprocating dies mounted on continuously rotating tables 110, 109, lowering the upper die by means of a cam surface to mould the candy and raising the lower die by a cam surface to eject it. A stick may be inserted into each candy through a slot 139 in the side of the die holder. The knives 41, 42 are operated in timed relation to the intermittent rotation of the feed rollers by means of cams driven from a shaft 56, see Fig. 23 (not shown). Both the cam surfaces for operating the dies are pivotally mounted at one side. The distance between the surfaces and the heads 130, 131, Fig. 6, with which they engage, may be adjusted. The lower cam track 134 may be mounted in an oil bath 168. A cam track 134<SP>1</SP> may be used to positively lower the die 122 after ejection. A gradually increasing pressure is applied' to the candy between the pair of dies at the second die station (from the receiving point 140) and continuing until the dies have reached the fourth die station. The sticks 142 are fed from a hopper 210, Fig. 14, to slots 215 in a rotary drum 214. A driven knurled rod precludes the bunching of the sticks in the hopper. The sticks drop from the drum and are grasped between fixed fingers 231, 232, see Fig. 22 (not shown), and a pivotally mounted arm 233 which is forced towards the fingers by the action of a spring 241. The arm is normally kept away from the fingers, before receiving the stick, by a cam track 240, Fig. 1. The fingers and arm are part of an assembly 221 which rotates with the dies. The stick is gradually displaced inwardly by a cam track 251 which acts on the rounded end of a telescopically mounted rod 244, and is then finally stuck in the candy by a radially adjustable cam track 255. After the stick has been stuck in the candy, the rod 244 is extended again by a radially adjustable cam track 259. The means 175 for removing the moulded candies comprises a shaft 176, Fig. 9, a circular plate 190 rotatably mounted on the shaft; and four quadrant plates 189 pivotally mounted at 188. The pivot mountings 186 have cam rollers 184 which engage with a peripheral cam surface 183. As the shaft 176 rotates, a plate 189 is moved upwardly by the cam surface to hold the stick of a moulded candy against the plate 190. The candy is carried round to a discharge point where it is released. The plate 190 is resiliently supported by a spring 194, the compression of which may be adjusted by a collar 196. A reciprocating scraper 199, Fig. 1, is provided to remove any candies which have not received a stick. The various parts of the machine are operated in timed relation from an electric motor. Specification 208,153, [Class 87 (ii)], is referred to.
