Abstract

A rubbery copolymer of butadiene 1 : 3 and styrene is admixed with a resinous copolymer containing from 5 to 30 per cent of butadiene 1 : 3 and from 95 to 70 per cent styrene, the proportion of resin to synthetic rubber lying between 10 to 90 and 90 to 10, based on the total weight of the copolymers. The copolymerization may be carried out in aqueous emulsion using as modifier isohexyl, octadecyl or dodecyl mercaptans, di-(sec.-butyl)-, di-(2-methyl butyl)- or di-(2-methyl pentyl)-, di-(2-ethyl hexyl)-disulphides; di-o-dinitro-phenyl disulphide, di-p-nitro phenyl- and di-m-nitro-phenyl-disulphides; t-dodecyl mercaptan and reaction products of sulphuretted hydrogen and olefins such as pinene, styrene and tri-isobutylene; and di-(benzoic acid ester)-tetra sulphides, tolyl disulphide and trisulphide; and as catalyst persulphates, perborates, benzoyl or hydrogen peroxide or percarbonates; and as emulsifiers sodium rosinate, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate or tallow soap. The copolymer may be coagulated using mixed acid and a salt, or a salt and an alcohol. Cellulosic flock may be added. The compositions may be used in soles, football helmets and football shoulder pads. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also compositions in which natural rubber, rubbery copolymers of butadiene with mono- and di-chlorostyrenes, vinyl pyridine, acrylic and substituted acrylic nitriles, amides, acids and esters, vinyl acetate, and chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl furane, isobutylene and vinyl acetylene, polyisobutylene copolymers of isoprene and isobutylene, polyisoprene, or polychloroprene are admixed with resinous copolymers of isoprene; 2,3-dimethyl butadiene; 2-ethyl butadiene; 1 : 3-dimethyl butadiene; pentadiene-1,3 and -1,4; 3-methyl-pentadiene-2,4; 3,4-dimethyl pentadiene - 2,4, and straight or branched chained or cyclic hexa- and hepta-dienes with m- and p-chlorostyrenes, dichlorostyrenes, a -methyl- or a -isopropyl-styrene or vinyl naphthalenes. The compositions may be mixed with sulphur, zinc oxide and softeners and vulcanized. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:A rubbery copolymer of butadiene 1 : 3 and styrene is admixed with a resinous copolymer containing from 5 to 30 per cent butadiene 1 : 3 and from 95 to 70 per cent styrene, the proportion of resin to synthetic rubber lying between 10/90 and 90/10, based on the total weight of the copolymers. Cellulosic flock, softeners, sulphur and zinc oxide may be added and the whole vulcanized. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also compositions in which natural rubber, rubbery copolymers of butadiene with mono-or di-chlorostyrenes, vinyl pyridine, acrylic and substituted acrylic nitriles, amides, acids and esters, vinyl acetate, chloride, or furane, vinylidene chloride, isobutylene, or vinylacetylene, polymers of isobutylene, isoprene or chloroprene, and copolymers of isobutylene and isoprene, are mixed with resinous copolymers of isoprene, ethyl and methyl derivatives of butadiene, penta-, hexa- and hepta-dienes with m- or p-chlorostyrenes, dichloro-styrenes, -methyl or -isopropyl styrenes, or vinyl nephthalenes. The compositions may be mixed with sulphur, zinc oxide and softeners and vulcanized. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
