Abstract

634,805. Planing ; gear-cutting. FELLOWS GEAR SHAPER CO. June 20, 1947, No. 16395. Convention date, July 27, 1946. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A machine tool for generating gears &c. comprises a plurality of shaping units carried on a turret 19 rotatably mounted on a supporting structure 15, each unit including a rotatable cutter-holder 29 and a rotatable work-holder 58, one of which is reciprocable to effect a cutting traverse between cutter and work, means for rotating both holders of the several units at suitable relative angular speeds and directions, common actuating means 31 operatively connected to reciprocate the reciprocable holders of all the units, and means for rotating the turret to bring the units in turn to a station where finished work-pieces may be replaced by blanks. Each of ten generating units comprises an electric motor 85 rotating a pinion cutter 30 and a work-holder 58. The cutters are reciprocated by an electric motor 39 driving an adjustable crank 46 connected with an adjustable rack 50 (see Group XXIV) to reciprocate the central tubular member 31 formed with circumferential rack teeth connected by levers 36 to circumferential teeth 33 on the spindles. The levers 36 are pivoted at 35 to casings 25 which are adjusted vertically to vary the position of the cutter stroke. The turret 19, supported on the base 10 by bearings 11, 12 and 16, is rotated by a motor 112 driving through gears 121, 122. Each work-holder 58 is carried by a slide 60, Fig. 3, which is supported against a bearing- face 84 during a cutting-stroke and is then withdrawn by a cranked cam-rod 76 which is actuated by a spring 78 and a cam 83. The cams 83 are also rotated by the motor 112 through a differential gear 133, Fig. 1, a pinion 141, an annular gear 124 supported by rollers 125 on the turret base and pinions 127. An additional movement is imparted to them through the differential gear by the motor 39 which compensates for the planetary travel of the pinions 127. Each slide 60 is mounted in a carriage 59 which is withdrawn by springs 68 at a station where the finished gears are replaced by blanks. Each carriage is advanced again by a cam 63, also driven by the motor 85, acting through a lever 64 and a helical rack 67. The rack 67 is adjustable by hand to set the initial position of the work relatively to the cutter. Each of the movements is driven through readily-accessible change-gears. Cuttings, catching and removing.-Each workholder incorporates a tray 152 emptying into a central channel 155 from which cuttings are removed by a screw conveyer.
