Abstract
634,308. Welding railway &c rails. SCHLATTER, H. A. Sept. 6, 1946, No. 26920. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1945. [Class 83 (iv)] Portable apparatus for flash butt welding rails &c. comprises a holding-device for the rail ends and a co-operating transformer unit embodying means for moving the rails during heating, fusion and upsetting. The holding- device comprises doubly joggled channel girders 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, yoked at their ends, supporting clamps 6, 17 secured to the rail ends by lateral fishplates and screws 7<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>1</SP>, 18<SP>1</SP>, 19<SP>1</SP>, 20<SP>1</SP> and vertical screws 14, 15, 25, 26. The clamps 6, 17 have anchor bolts 16, 27 and the girders are apertured for viewing the joint. The transformer 30 is mounted on a chassis 29 and has insulated tongs 31, 31<SP>1</SP>, 32, 32<SP>1</SP>, screw operated to clamp the rails A, B by pivoted contacts in the cranked region 5<SP>1</SP> of the chuck. The chassis 29 carries a cooling set 73, a fixed abutment 43 for engaging the anchor bolt 16 of one clamp 6, a movable tappet 47 for engaging the other clamp 17 and manual, electromotive and fluid pressure means for operation of the movable tappet 47 through connecting links 51 from a crosshead 53. A screwed shaft 54 reciprocates the crosshead 53 when rotated by a splined worm-wheel 65 driven by the electromotor 70 or directly by an abutment 61 driven by a hand wheel 62. The shaft carries a piston 56 in a cylinder 57. In operation, with the rail ends clamped, the transformer unit is registered with the anchor bolts 16, 17 and the contact tongs 31, 32, 31<SP>1</SP>, 32<SP>1</SP> secured. The electromotor 70 reciprocates the tappet 47 for heating up and is run at reduced speed for fusing off. An abutment on the tappet 47 admits pressure fluid to the cylinder 57 and directly moves the crosshead 53 for upsetting. A further abutment switches off the transformer current. In a modification the rails may be reciprocated by a hand wheel 72 driving the worm wheel 65.
