Abstract

633,987. Fencing. WOLLASTON, H. J. BUCHANAN-. Dec. 18, 1947, Nos. 33386/47 and 465/48. [Class 45] In a fence of the type in which a series of rigid incompressible members 3 are arranged alternately with a series of inextensible members 4 on flexible longitudinal members so that when such members are strained longitudinally the members 3 are stressed in compression and the members 4 are stressed in tension, the fence is constructed by linking together separate units each comprising a member 3 and/or a member 4 and one or more wire members adapted to engage corresponding wire members of adjacent units to form the longitudinal members. As shown in Fig. 7, the members 3, 4 are both rigid and the flexible longitudinal members comprise wires 7 ... 10 each having a loop at one end and a hook for engaging the loop of an adjacent unit at the other end. As shown in Fig. 8 single wires may be substituted for the wires 7, 8 and 9, 10. In a modification, Fig. 1, the members 4 and 7 ... 10 are combined into a single wire which may either pass through holes in the member 3 or be attached to each end. Intermediate bracing wires may be used. Each unit of the fence may comprise a rigid member 3 to which two or more of these wire members are attached; the wire members are either spaced vertically or partially overlap. The members 3 may be of wood or metal.
