Abstract

633,969. Control lever mechanism. HERCULES CYCLE & MOTOR CO., Ltd., and YAPP, T. A. Aug. 19, 1947, No. 22947. [Class 136 (i)]. A control of the type adapted to be mounted on the handle-bars, or on one of the frame members of a cycle and connected to the gear selecting mechanism by a flexible cable which is under tension except when top gear is engaged comprises a finger lever 17 and a plate or segment 23 to which the cable 28 is connected each mounted for purely angular movement about a fixed pivot 31, the finger lever having on one edge angularly spaced projections 20, 21 between which lies a peg 26 on the segment and the segment having on its periphery angularly spaced teeth 24, 25 co-operating with a spring pressed pivoted pawl 34 which is adapted to be engaged by one of the projections 20 or 21 on the finger lever to move the pawl clear of the teeth on the segment when the lever is moved in a direction to release the cable. The pawl 34 is pivotally mounted on a stud 35 and is urged by a spring 36 to cause a tooth 37 on the pawl to engage one of the teeth 24 or 25 in the segment. An extension of the pawl terminates in a nose 38. To change from bottom gear, Fig. 3, to normal gear, Fig. 4, the lever 17 is moved in an anti-clockwise direction causing the projection 20 to engage the tooth 37 and move the pawl outwardly against the spring and clear of the tooth 24. The tension in the cable 28 causes the segment to move in an anti-clockwise direction to the position shown in Fig. 4. The horn 21 acting on the nose 38 effects the change from normal to top gear. To change down, the lever 17 is moved clockwise and the engagement of the peg 26 with projection 20 causes the segment to move angularly with the lever until the pawl rides over and engages with the tooth 25. Further clockwise rotation of the lever causes the segment tooth 24 to engage with the pawl.
