Abstract

Ammonium nitrate as modification III is produced by mixing together solid ammonium nitrate and, say 8 per cent, of powdered potassium nitrate, and maintaining the unfused mixture at a temperature higher than 32.3 DEG C. for a sufficient time to ensure the substantial stabilization of the ammonium nitrate as modification III, e.g. 10-30 hours at 40-50 DEG C. In place of potassium nitrate another water-soluble potassium salt, that reacts metathetically with excess ammonium nitrate, may be used, e.g. the sulphate, chloride, dihydrogen ortho-phosphate, oxalate or chromate. Specification 573,147 is referred to.ALSO:Compositions comprising ammonium and potassium nitrates suitable, say, as fertilizers, are produced by mixing together a preponderating amount of solid ammonium nitrate and, say, 8 per cent. of powdered potassium nitrate, and maintaining the unfused mixture at a temperature higher than 32.3 DEG C for a sufficient time to ensure the substantial stabilization of the ammonium nitrate as modification III, e.g., 10-30 hours at 40 DEG -50 DEG C. In place of potassium nitrate another water-soluble potassium salt, that reacts metathetically with excess ammonium nitrate, may be used, e.g., the sulphate, chloride, dihydrogen orthophosphate, oxalate, or chromate. Other materials such as trinitrotoluene, liquid explosive nitric esters, vegetable carbohydrates, guanidine, nitroguanidine, alkali metal chromates, ammonium bichromate, phosphates, chlorides, sulphides, vaporizable insecticides such as d-hexachlorocyclohexane, or waxes may be added to the compositions. Specification 573,147, [Group XXI], is referred to.ALSO:Smoke-producing compositions, or fumigating compositions which contain lambda-hexachlorocyclohexane, have a combustible mixture wherein ammonium nitrate is stabilized as modification III by the inclusion of, say, 8 per cent of potassium nitrate. Specification 573,147, [Group XXI], is referred to.
