Abstract

632,688. Boring, milling, &c. machines. KAUKAUNA MACHINE CORPORATION. April 1, 1947, No. 8785. Convention date, July 22, 1946. [Class 83 (iii)] A boring, milling and tapping machine comprises a rotatable column 25 supported on a carriage 19 slidable on a bed 15, a slide 26 which is vertically adjustable on the column 25, a cross-rail 27 slidably mounted on the slide 26, a headstock 28 including a rotatable tool-supporting spindle 117 carried by the cross-rail 27 and drive means for the spindle including a motor M1 and speed change transmission 29 carried by the cross-rail, the headstock and the drive means being mounted on opposite ends of the cross-rail so as to counterbalance each other. The headstock is mounted on the cross-rail through the intermediary of a double swivel connection 30 so that it can pivot about an axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the cross-rail and can be angularly adjusted about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the spindle. The slide is provided with eccentrically-mounted guiding and supporting rollers for the cross-rail which comprises a pair of flanged members 60 secured together at one end by a housing 65 for the transmission 29 and at the other end by a casing 66 forming part of the swivel connection 30. The cross-rail is moved along the slide 26 by means of a cross-shaft provided with hand wheels 106. The slide 26 is moved on the column 25 by means of a motor-driven pinion engaging with a rack on the column. The weight of the slide 26 and parts carried thereby is counterbalanced by a weight enclosed in the column 25. The carriage 19 is movable along a guideway on the bed 15 by means of a motor-driven pinion engaging a rack on the bed, and is provided with a resilient scraper member to keep the bed guideway free of chips or other foreign material and with an absorbent pad for lubricating the guideway. The spindle 117 is keyed to a sleeve 118 which is driven from the transmission 29 through means including shafts 191, 196, 200 and 205. The transmission 29 is controlled by a manuallyoperated shaft 210 which is connected thereto by means of a shaft 214. The spindle is fed by means of a ram 125 provided with a rack 131 which is engaged by a pinion 130 driven from the sleeve 118 through a speed changer 132 and a master clutch 133. The sleeve 118 may support a milling cutter. The spindle 117 and ram 125 are counterbalanced by means urging them to their retracted position and comprising a shaft provided with a gear 151 meshing with the rack 131 on the ram 125 and a spring 152. The bearings at the inner end of the spindle and ram are enclosed in a hollow cap filled with oil or other lubricant. The column 25 is rotatably supported on the carriage 19 through the intermediary of a socket member, and means are provided for releasably clamping the column against rotation.
