Abstract

632,376. Automatic exchange apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and ROBERTS, W. L. Oct. 4, 1946, No. 29654. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL (c)] The selection circuit for a pulse multiplex system as described in Specification 632,375 comprises an electronic device for selecting a time position in a cycle for the emission of a pulse in one or more steps from a reference time position, which may be the synchronizing pulse. A source C, Fig. 1, supplies a train of pulses, a, Fig. 2, -comprising timing pulses and larger amplitude synchronizing pulses. Normally, only the synchronizing pulses can pass the gate F, but, when a start signal from source B operates the gate, the timing pulses are also transmitted. Both types pass the phase shift gate C, curve f, and are applied to the synchronizing delay circuit H. Before the start signal operates, the synchronizing pulses are effective to operate circuit H which has an operating time only slightly shorter than the interval between them, curve H, so that, when the timing pulses commence they are ineffective. The circuit H feeds an output circuit producing pulses e which are also fed to a coincidence gating circuit E. Upon a phase shifting signal b being supplied from source A, the phase shift delay circuit D produces an output pulse c of slightly greater duration than the interval between two synchronizing pulses so that the coincidence mixer F emits a pulse d when pulse e is applied. The pulse d closes the gate circuit G to suppress the synchronizing pulse so that the circuit H cannot be operated by that pulse and is triggered by the first succeeding timing pulse. As a result the following output pulse e is delayed by one timing pulse, each input b causing a further delay. In the absence of further input pulses, the output pulses continue at the same intervals. When the start signal is removed, the timing pulses cease and the output pulses revert to synchronism with the synchronizing pulses.
