Abstract

631,795. Speed governors. DAVEY, PAXMAN & CO., Ltd., PAXMAN, E. P., and HOWE, A. G. May 18, 1945, Nb. 12604. [Class 57] [Also in Group XXVII] Means for controlling two or more engines geared to a common output shaft comprises a manually-operable device for progressively setting regulating means of each engine to vary the fuel supply thereto and for progressively adjusting simultaneously the load setting of an engine speed responsive governor of each engine and means operable by the governor of each engine to operate the regulating means so as to cut off or reduce the fuel supply to each engine when the speed of the engines exceeds that determined by the load setting of the governors. The embodiment of the invention described comprises two Diesel engines connected to a common gear box and each engine drives through a reverse gear to a pinion which engages with a main gear wheel carried on a propeller shaft. A common manually controlled member (not shown) operates a control rod 9 of each engine and each control rod operates a cam 1 controlling the fuel supply of its particular engine and also actuates a load setting control of the engine governor (not shown). The controls of one engine only are shown. The rod 9 operates the cam 1 through members 5, 6. Member 6 is adjustable by means of a threaded pin and nuts 10. The cam can bear upon an adjustable pin 18 carried by a lever 19 pivoted on a shaft 25 in the governor housing and connected by a telescopic link 21 to the operating bar 23 of a fuel pump. The link carries a strong spring 22 which enables it normally to operate as a fixed link. The shaft 25 extends into the housing. Fixed to the shaft is a sleeve 28 having an arm 29 which can co-operate with an adjustable pin 30 or the lever 19. A torsion spring within the sleeve is connected to the sleeve at one end and to the lever 19 at the other. When the engine speed exceeds that determined by the load setting of the engine governor the governor operates an arm 26 within the governor housing the arm being fixed to the shaft. The shaft is rotated and moves the arm to move the lever 19 in a direction to reduce or cut off the fuel supply. The link 21 is made telescopic so that the operating bar 23 can be moved at starting to provide an increased fuel supply by compressing the spring or moved to the right to cut off the fuel when desired. Adjustment so that each engine receives the same amount of fuel is carried out by means of the pin 18. It is stated that governors of the type described in Specifications 516,804 and 527,258, [both in Group XXIX], are employed but other suitable governors could be used.
