Abstract

631,490. Loading and unloading vehicles; overhead cranes. LETOURNEAU, Inc., R. G. June 11, 1947, No. 15408. Convention date, June 11, 1946. [Class 78 (iv)] Mechanism for loading a vehicle comprises a pair of longitudinally extending, laterally spaced rails supported above the vehicle, a carriage consisting of a rigid frame disposed intermediate and depending between the rails a pair of spaced rollers journalled at each end of the frame and riding the rails, a pulley journalled in the frame between each pair of rollers, a cable anchored adjacent one end of the rails and reeved over one pulley and looped downwardly therefrom between the pulleys, and then reeved over the other pulley and extending therefrom longitudinally of the rails, a winch to which the other end of the cable is operatively connected, a load suspending unit including a sheave supported in rolling relation in the loop in the cable below the carriage, and power means to pull the carriage along the rails in one direction or the other. Figs. 1, 4 show the application to a wagon supported on a tractor 10 wherein the carriage 16 is moved on rollers 17 along rails 15 housed in a member 12 by a cable 22 operated by a reversible winch 20. This cable extends from opposite sides of the winch drum 21, the cable portion 23 passing round a sheave 25 in a pulley block 26, and a pulley 27 to an anchor and then secured at 28 on the carriage whilst the other portion 24 extends round a sheave 29 in the block 26, through a pipe 30 running the full length of the member 12, and around a sheave 31 to an anchor 32 on the carriage. The load hook 38 is supported from a cable 34 one end of which is secured at 35 to the member 12 whilst the other end is connected to a winch 42. Rollers 40 journalled in crossheads 39 secured to the bottom of the carriage 16 cause the cable 34 to maintain track on pulleys 18 on the carriage.
