[Classes 145(i) and 145(ii)] An apparatus for plugging sheet material especially veneers, with scarfed plugs comprises a device for cutting a plug hole 16 in the sheet, one or more containers 5 for adhesive-coated scarfed plugs 12 located at a distance from the cutting device, means 6 for removing a plug from a container, and a heated member 9 for transferring the removed plug to the plug hole and securing it therein. Scarfed holes 16 are cut in the sheet material 15 by means of a circular saw 2 rotating about an axis 3 which in turn can reciprocate about the axis 4. An adhesive-coated plug 13 is removed from the pile by a pusher 6 and brought below the heated head 9 which is preferably fitted with spikes 11 and glueing teeth 10. The head, carried by a shaft 8 which can move vertically and also rotate in a cylindrical bearing, is brought into contact with the plug, raised, rotated, and lowered to press the plug into the previously cut plug-hole 16 and secure it therein. The head 9 is preferably electrically heated, whilst the adhesive preferred is a dry thermosetting glue. The mechanism may be operated by compressed air.
