630,523. Friction clutches. NATIONAL SUPPLY EXPORT CORPORATION, and OIL WELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. July 1, 1947, No. 17349. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1946. [Class 80 (ii)] A fluid-pressure actuated friction-clutch, particularly for use in oilfield drilling machinery, comprises a rotatable housing 19, keyed by its hub 16 to a driving shaft 10, and surrounding a ring-element 44 integral with a coaxial driven sprocket 46, rotatable on the shaft 10 and having splined on it a friction disc 41, which is clamped between a pair of discs 24, 25, slidable axially on housing-bolts 26, by fluid-pressure acting on an annular piston 34, sealed by diaphragms 30, 31 in a bolted chamber 28, which, together with the piston is carried externally of the housing 19, the adjacent clutch disc 25 having projections 39 bolted to the piston and passing freely through housing-holes 20 to transmit piston-thrust for pressing the clutch-discs together against the opposite wall of the housing. Pressure fluid (e.g. air) reaches the piston-chamber 28 through a stationary glanded fitting 77, a shaft duct 66 and a detachable pipe 73, Fig. 2, having banjo-ends seated, with the interposition of deformable rings 63, against flats on the shaft and a chamber inlet-lug 70 by pressurescrews 65, 72.
