Abstract
629,831. Die-stocks. STRINGER, F. Oct. 29, 1947, Nos. 28841/47 and 4627/48. [ Class 83 (iii)] A die-stock for forming a screw-thread on conduit tubing 24 comprises a mandrel having a portion formed as a lead-screw 20 for engaging a screw-threaded member fixed in relation to the die-stock 10, and work-engaging portions 31 arranged, on rotation of the mandrel with respect to the tube 24, to engage the inner surface of the tube and fix the latter in relation to the mandrel. The lead-screw 20 is located in a sleeve 16 fixed to the die-stock, and engages a nut 17 mounted on one end of the sleeve. The enlarged inner end 25 of the screw 20 fits the bore of the sleeve and is recessed at 26 to receive the inner end of the work-engaging end 21 of the mandrel; the end 21 is connected to the screw 20 by a pin 28 and has a collar 27 provided with keys 9 to engage recesses in the end 25 of the screw. At its outer end, the end 21 of the mandrel is formed of reduced crosssection at 30 and of oval shape for engagement thereover of two semi-cylindrical friction-plates 31. These plates are positioned by a split-ring 32 and have flats 33 formed on their inner surfaces to co-operate with the oval section 30 and expand the plates against the bore of the tube 24 when the mandrel is rotated by a tommy-bar 22 on the end of the screw 20. A die 11 is positioned over the mandrel and held in a recess in the stock 10 by flanged screws 12 and nuts 15, Fig. 5, and after expansion of the friction plates 31, the die is fed on to the tube by rotation of the stock 10 through handles 19.
