Abstract
Silicone resins are formed on the surface of materials consisting wholly or partly of wool by the hydrolysis of a mixture of a silane of the type X1X2SiR1R2 with silicon tetrachloride in such proportions as to give a solid hydrolysis product, X1 and X2 being chlorine or bromine and R1 and R2 alkyl or aryl groups such as methyl, ethyl, cetyl or phenyl, the material being subsequently washed. Suitable proportions are 30 per cent by weight of silicon tetrachloride and 70 per cent of diethyl silicon dichloride. The woollen material may contain 10-30 per cent by weight of moisture. The amount of solid polymer deposited is 1.5-4 per cent by weight. The mixture may be applied either in solution or as a vapour, the time of treatment being 10-30 minutes or until the desired amount of polymer is deposited. In an example a knitted woollen fabric is boiled for 20 minutes in a carbon tetrachloride solution containing 0.4 per cen by weight of silicon tetrachloride and 1 per cent of diethyl dichloro silane, and then immersed with squeezing and agitation in excess of water at room temperature for 5 minutes, dried in warm air and washed in soap solution.ALSO:Upon the surface of materials consisting wholly or partly of wool and containing 10-30 per cent by weight of moisture there is formed a solid deposit of a polymer in amount 1.5-4 per cent by weight, the said polymer being produced by hydrolysis of a mixture of a silane of the type X1X2SiR1R2 with silicon tetrachloride in such proportions as to give a solid hydrolysis product, X1 and X2 being chlorine or bromine and R1 and R2 alkyl or aryl groups such as methyl, ethyl, cetyl or phenyl. The material is subsequently washed. Suitable proportions are 30 per cent by weight of silicon tetrachloride and 70 per cent of diethyl silicon dichloride. The mixture may be applied either in solution or as a vapour, and for about 10-30 minutes or, in the case of a vapour, until sufficient polymer has been deposited. The deposit is resistant to scouring and dry-cleaning agents. Softening agents may be present in the final washing to improve the handle. In an example 100 g. knitted woollen fabric is boiled for 20 minutes in a carbon tetrachloride solution containing 0.4 per cent by weight of silicon tetrachloride and 1 per cent by weight of diethyl dichloro silane. It is then immersed with squeezing and agitation in water at room temperature for 5 minutes, dried in warm air and washed in soap solution.
