Abstract

629,041. Surgical injection apparatus. ABBOTT LABORATORIES. Aug. 11, 1947, No. 22280. Convention date, Oct. 5, 1946. [Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] Apparatus for the intravenous administration of liquids comprises a cap for the liquid container having a nozzle, leading to an outlet and flexible delivery tube, and also a non- return valve in an inlet aperture. The screw cap 4 clamps the resilient closure member 9 against the rim of the flask 1 or other container. The member 9 has an outlet duct 16 extending through a nozzle 14 on which a glass sight tube 37 may be pressed. A second aperture 20 communicates with a metal valve member 24 enclosing a ball type non-return valve 28. An outlet tube 38, preferably of transparent plastic, leads to a conical union piece 41 for connection to the needle holder. Normally the valve body 24 is provided with an air filter consisting of a card or similar tube 33 retaining a cotton wool wad 35, but the orifice of the body is tapered to fit the union member so that the outlet of one container may be connected to the inlet of another in the manner shown. This arrangement is used when the total volume of liquid required is greater than the content of a single flask. A tubular filter element 21 may be fitted over an internal boss aligned with the outlet aperture. The rate of flow is controlled by an adjustable plate 43 having a tapered hole 44 in which the feed tube is constricted. The apparatus is sterilized and packed in a sealed container comprising, in an outer rectangular carton, an elongated cardboard spool on which the feed tube is wound and having internal partitions which locate the cap and union members. Sterilised removable caps are placed over the ends of these two members before packing.
