[Class 96] [Also in Groups VI, XV and XXIII] An implement of the pencil type comprises an elongated core and a sheath enclosing the core consisting of flexible brittlized sheet material wound around the core and a layer of adhesive between the convolutions of sheet material holding them together. The core may be in the form of a lead pencil, an eraser, a cosmetic preparation, a sharpening stone, or a dental device. A sheet 11 of flexible material, coated with adhesive 12, is wound around a core 10 and may be cut away as the core is used or worn away. The sheet material may be newsprint paper, cellophane or cellulose acetate, and the adhesive used may be sodium silicate. To facilitate cutting the sheath, the newsprint paper is embrittled by charring at 200‹ C. for five minutes, but the degree of charring may be varied to suit the required tensile strength. In a modification which comprises a sheath having three sections, the first and third sections are composed of smooth newsprint paper, the intermediate section is composed of paper which has its surface regularly indented to provide air spaces between the convolutions in order to decrease the density of the sheath.
